Hello friends,

I am an F-1 student in the US. I have never worked using my SS. I have paid a lot of tuition fees till now (for three years).
What is tax filing actually? Do F-1 students also have to file tax who have just studied here and never worked? Please comment with your suggestions. Thank you.

Furke ( thats an awesome name u got ) in order to file a tax, u must pay taxes. taxes like income tax ( taxes from ur income), s.s and etc.
In order for an F1 students to file an income tax, u must be resided In US for more then 5 yrs. In ur case just wait for 2 more yrs to file ur taxes.

Oh bro, mero profile herya ho? I was lil shocked how the hell did you know i m from houston?

Btw, I don't know if it is 1098-T but I received a form from my college (Lonestar) that stated about tuition fees I paid, taxes, IRS blah blah. I didn't pay much attention to that form and trashed in the bin right in front of the mail box. What if it was 1098-T? Am I in trouble???

Thanks h_k. Please reply.

I guess it was 1098 T. I got that form from my university and college every year. And, each year I discarded. What do I do now? But, one question here, I have not provided my SS to none of my colleges. Isn't SS vital for that form?

What a student is supposed to do to form 1098 T? Please reply to this question.

Furke:
I heard from somebody who used to file 1040 NR, Never used 1040 NR EZ, because he used to itemized. That 1098 -T will show your total Tuition Expense for the tax year.
In your Itemized deduction, you can have your tuition, books and stationary, mandated expenses charged by school/university ( not Health Insurance ) which will be higher than your standard deduction, will end up getting more refund and in your case it may not be over than your withheld.  Please check with other person too.

So, I think the Indian tax preparer may be right.

Many of my frens (f1) are making quick $1000 by filling income taxes this year. u could have too, but its crucial to have ur s.s listed on your 1098-T. Even if u have discarded the form, u can actually get another one from the college and most of the colleges and universities now have it on their system so that u can print one.
check ur college website.

Jhapali: Did you have any seminar on Tax? I think if you itemize , you may add tuition, mandatory expenses imposed by  school but not health insurance, books and stationary including computer, which gives higher refund ( not over to your federal withheld.) .

jhapaliketo: U dont file 1098 T, what u file is 1040A form, where 1098-T is already included if u r a college student filling income tax. back to ur question i think u need S.S to file 1040A (which is mainly for people who has a privileges to work in US legally).

lot of my frens who have s.s and are in F1 filed 1040A and got $1000 back. even though they weren't supposed to filed 1040A, they said who cares when we pay $12000 every year. that makes a lot of sense to me and they truly deserve it.
