Dalai Lama more popular than Pope

HAMBURG: Germans like the Dalai Lama more than they do their native-born Pope Benedict XV.

A study, carried out for the magazine Der Spiegel, was published this weekend and showed that 44% of those questioned saw the Tibetan spiritual leader as a role model, while only 42% attributed the same qualities to the pope.

The Dalai Lama enjoyed a particularly high popularity rating among the young and better educated, according to the survey.

The Tibetan leader, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for his efforts to achieve a non-violent solution to the Tibetan problem, is due to pay a 10-day visit to Germany from Thursday. He will deliver lectures and attend a congress of Buddhist monks and nuns. - Sapa-dpa

That's right. He is the symbol of peace and who doesn't love peace.

No matter how quickly Tibet was loosing its identity or Tibetans were learning Mandarin or Cantonese to survive in their own soil he is still respected...

my mistake. i’d no idea Mr. Bush didn win peace prize....i thought he was another Nobel laureate as the Norwegian foreign minister had voted him twice for that...nonetheless, he was nominated along with Mr. Blair for the prize and only the nominees get the reward....tyo Norwegian le pkd gang lai pani vote garne ho ki...ghumnalai bolaisakyo...

दलाईलामा क्याथोलोक पोप भन्दा पपुलर छन बन्ने कुरा झूट हो । यसको कारण छ :

तिब्बती लामा धर्मका नेता दलाईलामा , कम्युनिष्ट चीन विरोधी भएका कारणले युरोप र अमेरिकी समर्थनमा बढी चर्चित बनाइएका हुन , एउटा धार्मिक नेता भएर आफ्नो अनुयायीहरूको मान्य हुनु स्वाभाविक भए पनि र दलाई लामा एउटा सम्मानित धार्मिक नेता भए पनि , विश्वलाई असर पार्ने उनको शान्तिका लागि योगदान के हो भन्ने कुरामा कोही प्रष्ट छैन । यदि दलाई लामा चीन कम्युनिष्ट चीन बिरोधी हुँदैनथे भने, न त उनी अहिले जस्तो चर्चामा हुन्थे न त शान्तिको नोबेल पुरस्कार नै जित्थे । रक्तपिपाशु हिंसावादी कम्युनिष्टहरूले दिएको ब्लेसिङ इन डिस्गाइज हो दलाई लामाको विश्व व्यक्तित्व ।

तर , यसका बावजूद दलाई लामा एउटा असल विचार बोकेका धार्मिक नेता हुन भन्ने कुरामा दुविधा छैन । तर उनी सबै भन्दा ठूला हुन वा पोप भन्दा बढी पपुलर छन भन्न खोज्नु ,बिनाकारण धर्म माथि राजनीति थोपरेर तेरो धर्म भन्दा मेरो धर्म ठीक अनि मेरो धार्मिक नेता भन्दा मेरो बढी पपुलर छ भन्ने बच्कना विचार प्रस्तुत गर्नु हो । धर्म र धार्मिक नेता ठीक र ठूला हुन भने सबै हुन हैन भने सबै मार्क्स बाजेले बने जस्तो अफिम र अफिमका मालिक हुन ।

तर यो सायमी जि यस्ता यस्ता फित्तुर लेखेर , मेरो जात ठिक , मेरो धर्म ठिक , मेरो काठमाण्टु ठिक, फलानो बढी पपुलर , र फलानो ठीक , अनि आँफूलाई रिस उठेका जति सबै बेठिक भन्दै गाली फलाक्न बाहेक केही आउन्न कि क्या हो , हँ ?

कहाँको जनमतबाट यस्तो निचोड पायौ तिम्ले हँ ?

त्यो पोप संग चै नदाजौं तर हिन्दुहरु चाँही हिटलर भन्दा पनि खत्तम हुन्छ भनेर चाहि जान्नु है साथीहरु हो्।
बुद्द धर्म भनेको कस्तो धर्म हो भनेर चाही मैले यहाँ भनिराख्नुपर्दैन। विश्वको नमुना शान्तिकोदुत भएर कहलिएको छ।
यदी दलाई लामा ले तिब्बतलाई टुक्राउन चाहेन भने दलाईलामालाई अहिले पनि चीनको केन्द्रिय सरकारले स्वागत गर्नेछ तर दलाईलामा ले तिब्बत फुटाउने खेल खेलिराखेको छ अमेरिका र भारतको आडमा ।त्यै भएर दलाई लामालाई देश निकाला गरिएको हो। यदी दलाई लामाले अमेरीकाको जस्तो भए उहिले सद्दाम हुस्सेन बनाउथे अथवा बिनलादेन बनाईसक्थे।
तर दलाईलामा भाग्यमानी मान्नुपर्छ निर्वासित जीवन त जिउनपाएको छ, नत्र त त्यही हो सद्दाम हुस्सेन भईसक्थे अमेरिकामा भएको भए।
अनि शान्ति नोबेल पुरस्कार जित्नु पनि त्यो चीनको निहुँ मात्रै हो अरु केही होईन। अमेरिकामा जन्मेर त्यो अमेरिकाको कुनै एक प्रान्तलाई छुटाएर स्वतन्त्र देशको माग गरेको भए त शान्ति होईन की स्वर्ग पु्र्याईसक्थे।

हैन यो सुमेधुले कुरा बुझ्या हुन् कि बुझ पचायका हुन् । राम्ररि पढ्नोस् त, कुरा जर्मनिको हो । पोप पनि जर्मनि मै जन्मेको तर त्याहा दलाइ लामा बढि पपुलर भयेको कुरा सान्दर्भिक नै हुन्छ । यो अ मेरिका को कुरा सन्सारको कुरा काहाबाट ल्याउनु भयेको हो कुन्नि ? फेरि दलाइ लामाको लोकप्रियता को कारण कमनिजम् भन्नु हुन्छ, के पोपको लोकप्रियता को कारण पनि त्यहि होइन र ? जे कारणहरुले जोसुकै लोकप्रिय होउन तर इतिहासलाइ उल्टो फरकौन सन्किन्छ र ? जे जस्तोले पपुलर् भए हुनदिनोस् न केको टाउको दुखाइ या चिनको इतिहास फेरि लेखम् । यद्धपि दलाइ लामाको बिषयमा ग्यानको कमि देखिन्छ, राजनिति त तपाइले पो सुरु गर्नु भये जस्तो लाग्यो । छोड्नोस् दलाइ लामाको खुट्टा तान्न, उनि नेपालि होइनन ।

Germans like the Dalai Lama more than they do their native-born
Pope Benedict XVI, according to a survey published on Saturday.

A study carried out for the news magazine Der Spiegel showed
that 44 per cent of those questioned saw the Tibetan spiritual
and secular leader as a role model, while only 42 per cent attributed
the same qualities to the pope.

The Dalai Lama enjoyed a particularly high popularity rating among
the young and better educated, according to the survey by the TNS
research organization.

Half of those questioned in these groups believed the Buddhist leader
was able "to provide advice on how to live," according to the study,
which showed that Germans found Buddhism a more sympathetic religion
than Christianity or Islam.

Asked what they thought was the "most peaceful religion," 43 per cent
opted for Buddhism, while 41 per cent chose Christianity. Only 1 per cent
picked Islam.

10 Questions for the Dalai Lama

The 72-year-old Dalai Lama is one of the world's leading religious figures,
the spiritual head of the Tibetan Buddhist religion and political leader of
the great Lost Cause of a Tibet now gobbled up by China.

Rick Ray is a producer of cable-TV documentaries. There is a bit of a disparity
in their levels of spiritual attainment.

Ray's film 10 Questions for the Dalai Lama is mildly informative, for those
who know little about his subject: It takes us on a Discovery Channel-level
tour of the lama's biography and political situation.
But the film never rises above the spiritual or intellectual level of a TV news anchor.
It is a dispiriting film to watch, if you have any real interest in the subject.
Ray displays his sloppiness with several oddly obvious misstatements of fact:
a two-dimensional mandala is described as three-dimensional, for instance,
even as we see the object on camera and can make our own judgment as to
how many dimensions are being displayed.

The filmmaker requested an interview with the religious leader and was granted
an audience of 45 minutes and an allowed 10 questions. Unfortunately, although
Ray talks about fretting greatly over coming up with good questions, those
he finally arrives at are woefully underinformed and shallow.

And given those 45 minutes and the need to make a film at least twice that
long for theatrical release, there is quite a bit of padding added.

And although the Dalai Lama often waxes deep and eloquent elsewhere
and for other interviewers about religious matters, he apparently sized up
his interviewer with acumen and responded with the short-form,
easy-to-assimilate answers that he figured his interlocutor would be able
to comprehend: "Tibet and Buddhism for Dummies," as it were.

So we hear a good bit about the political situation in Tibet but very little
about the overriding world view that places the history in a more cosmic context.
The Dalai Lama has simplified his answers for this simpler interviewer.

If you have only a tangential interest in the subject, this film will provide you
with the short-form version of the history of Tibet and the former lamasery
at Lhasa, the Chinese invasion, the current "temporary" residence at Dharamsala,
India, and something of the jolly nature of the monk.
