Interesting topic for discussion.

Having read above postings, I have to admit I am quite curious to meet and learn from a bona fide (or as bona fide as possible) astrologer.  Absent that, perhaps the learned ones here, Rahulvai or Geology Tiger for instance, can explain to all of us skeptics here the following:

• How do the planets affect a person's characteristics or future?

• Why is the moment of birth so critical?  If a planet is exercising its power on the child being born, why does that power effective when the said child is born and not before?  You mean to tell me that a centimeter or two of flesh and skin can shield the baby from these all powerful planets until it exits the birth canal while floors of concrete and steel of the hospital amount to nothing?

• How is Suni different than Sukra, or for that matter Budha?  Are the "rays" from these planets different from each other?

• Besides the calculation of the location of heavenly bodies, what exactly is mathematical in astrology?

There are more questions, but let's start with these.  Can anybody address them?

I am sure you all are either in the process of graduating from college or have graduated from college.  So let's put on our critical thinking cap on.

I read through the paper (NOT peer reviewed journal paper, mind you) that MNO linked above.  Sure there are some mathematics related to the positionings of planets - which I had already acknowledged above.  However, nothing in the paper answers my questions.  In fact, the paper itself raises many inconsistencies and errors in astrological thinking when mathematically analyzed.

My problem with this astrology thingie is there are are lot of assumptions with absolutely no logic.

If a certain "planet" is in certain "house", certain things happen or certain "character" gets accentuated.  But there is no explanation anywhere, not only in the said paper but also in any publication that I have found, why that is so?

Mercury promotes Communications.  Venus promotes Harmony.  Mars promotes Energy.  And so on.  But HOW?  What is it about, say Mars for example, emanate Energy so uniquely.  I wonder the recent Mars robots "Curiosity" is now fully infused with this "Energy".

See, in my opinion (and it is just my opinion, no disrespect to anybody) this jyotishi thingie is culturally legitimized scam that preys on weak and/or lazy minds.
