Hello : I was wondering if someone could tell me what a "decent" stipend sum is. Also, what's the highest stipend amount you've heard of?

Are you refering to Assistantship or schlorship? Stipend is not commonly used in USA. It is mostly used in India.

Quagmire, I know ur concerns........But, u know what adding "decent" infront of Stipend and "highest stipend amount" doesn't make any sense.. A stipend is a form of monetary payment or salary, such as for an internship or apprenticeship. It is often distinct from a wage or a salary because it does not necessarily represent payment for work performed, instead it represents a payment that enables somebody to be exempt partly or wholly from waged or salaried employment in order to undertake a role that is normally unpaid, (e.g. a magistrate in England), or voluntary, or which cannot be measured in terms of a task (e.g. members of the clergy). Stipends are usually lower than what would be expected as a permanent salary for similar work. This is because the stipend is complemented by other benefits such as accreditation, instruction, food and/ or accommodation. Universities usually refer to money paid to graduate students as a stipend, rather than as wages, to reflect complementary benefits. Background Stipends may be utilized by non-profits or organizations working with oppressed, or other less-represented groups of people such as youth. These organizations may stipend youth at a higher than local minimum wage rate, or living wage, to empower them to enter the workforce. This type of stipend normally last for less than a year. In some Catholic circles, a Mass stipend is the payment, which is generally nominal, to a priest for saying a Divine Liturgy or Mass (liturgy). Usually a small donation, depending on the size of the parish. Weddings and funerals typically have much larger donations given, but that is usually at the discretion of the family or individual in question. However, it is considered immoral to demand payment for a sacrament (which is known as 'simony'), and stipends are seen as gifts. The term also has a specific use in the Church of England, meaning the salary of a stipendiary minister, one who receives payment directly from the diocese (as opposed to other forms of disbursement such as free use of a house in return for clerical duties, known as house-for-duty). A non-stipendiary minister is therefore one who is licensed to perform clerical duties but without receiving any kind of payment from the diocese - although non-stipendiary ministers often receive reimbursement of expenses incurred in pursuit of their duties, e.g. travel, postage, and telephone costs. Non-stipendiary ministers normally depend on secular employment for their income and are often unavailable for pastoral duties when they are fulfilling their obligations to their employer. These clergy are also sometimes known as ministers in secular employment.

Depends on the field. Biological sciences pay up to $32,000 a year.

Highest I have ever heard: Euro 60,000 Minimum ever heard of: $17,000 Descent = depends on where your school is located. I would consider a stipned that covers my tuition, fees, rent, food, and other necessary expenses.

Appreciate your feedback. But I'll have to admit that I'm more concerned and confused that ever. Here's the case. One of my buddies is in his senior year and he already got accepted into a grad school for bio-chemistry and he is gonna get $22,000/year and along with that, he's gonna enjoy a full ride. Another friend just started her Masters in Accounting and she's getting a full ride along with $9,000/year. Now someone told me that what she received wasn't a big sum ( of course, to anybody else, full ride for Grad School is more than enough ). So that's why I thought I'd ask. Now moving on, have you guys heard of someone who doesn't have a 3.0 GPA and doesn't have anything attractive in his resume succeeding to get Graduate assistant ship or am I asking basically an impossible question? Again, appreciate your feedback. Wish ignorant hypocrites shut their mouths and stopped nosing around unwanted places - oh the joy of being a Nepali.

Quagmire: I suggest you make your questions clear and understandable. As someone else pointed out you do not use adjective like "decent" for stipend payments. It is supposed to be something to cover your living expenses fully or partially and not to make you a millionaire. You should have asked what the average for a field of study X, a state/country Y and general idea of the university, eg., rank #Z is... I would be on crack if I I asked you how much it would cost me to by a 'decent' lunch without specifying what I would like to eat, the type restaurent, location etc? Hope you come out of grad school learning how to ask questions...

Quagmire, 3.0 GPA is not enough . But I might be wrong here. There are so many players when you apply for Graduate school and so many factors that they look @ and besides all, it matters too where u applying. As newlynew said, be little more open when u ask these kind of questions. I know a person who has perfect GPA in undergraduate, but didn't got any form of assistanship. He applied to some of the top 25 universities. Few things that matters when applying to masters ur undergrdaute GPA (most importantly last 60 credit hours ) however, this depends on college ur activities and participations in various organaziations ur resume and work experience. how close u are with teachers ( in most cases the head of the deparments decides who gets what), and luckly he is ur teacher in undergraduate too. links with the current guy who is about to graudaute and its his place u will be taking. GMAT or GRA score ur purpose of statements essays and i guess i missed few others here.... and finally offcourse college where u applying. theirs fund, total no of applicants, their expectation of students overall perfromance, and few others

You can check any Departmental websites at MIT, Harvard, Stanford or other universities to know the stipend amount. The Rockefeller U. and Memorial Sloan-Kettering have the highest stipend from the program (about $32K/yr). Harvard, MIT, Yale, Stanford are around $29,500-30,000 and Berkeley gives about $27,000. I know this because I'm in one of the programs. Hope that helps.

funkybuddha, ain't u flying little high? tell me how many nepalese go to MIT, Havard etc? to go there, u have to be outstanding and Nepal's education is not on that level to produce such minds. however, there are few who are in these colleges but very FEW. majority of nepalese grad struggle with their vocabs and communication. i have seen and met several of such individuals. if u can, u can provide the average for a college like Texas A & M etc? do u know how much they for postdoc in MIT? just curious. i started with $9,200 for nine months. and after 4-5 yrs they raised some. don't give wrong ideas. we nepalese have a tendency to exaggerate things. i would love to go where the stipend is $32 K/yr.

There are about 20 students at Harvard altogether and 10 at MIT, more than half of whom are grad students (either in a Master's or a doctoral program). A MIT post-doc earns, depending on the lab and the kind of research, anywhere from $38,000 to 50,000+, the latter especially if it's one of the endowed/spnsored fellowships with industries like Novartis.
Rockefeller pays not only the stipend money but also extra $2500 every year to buy books, softwares, new macbooks or to use it on travel expenses for conferences etc and the amount actually is cumulative over the years if you don't use all in one year. Both Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Rockefeller provide excellent housing (heavily subsidized) on Upper East-Side of Manhattan.
I don't need to exaggerate things and I fail to understand why you would presume I did. I was only sharing what I know from having gone through the application process and spent considerable time in picking a program; and if anyone on Sajha wants to find out more about top PhD programs in research/life sciences, I will be happy to answer any questions s/he may have. Thanks.

I get 26,000 per year with health insurance. I think places there pay more also because living expenses are rather high. I know that UF pays 26000 per year for its Biomedical Sciences PhD but it stretches quite far compared to us living on the east coast. Where do you go to school Funky Buddha?
