Do people in Nepal put small iron saucer in the pot while cooking daal? I understand this is to increase the iron intake. Is it safe?

Yes it is safe unless you are diagnosed with iron overload (Hemochromatosis) or the cast iron is not rusted.
Riddle: it's a small cast iron utensil usually used for daal jhanney or frying an egg, i believe it's called a "diuro" in nepali. I usually cook the kalo daal in pressure cooker and once the sithi lagaune part is done then i just put the cast iron in the daal and boil it for 10 mins or so. This makes the kalo daal really dark and tasty.

My bad...I totally misread the original post....I thought he was talking about putting an iron bar in the pressure cooking while daal is being cooked. Of course I know what daal jhanne process is.

Thanks folks.
I am going to try this out.
I usually put chicken stock cube (Goya's) in dal to make it more yummy.
I do like Ghiu with kalo dal and bhat, but it spikes up the cholestorol level so can't have it.

I had such a iron and I had used it to cook Dal. I used it in a pressure cooker. Dal was tasty and looked black like a traditional nepali kalo dal.
But I had problem keeping that iron from rusting. DUe to rust issues, I stopped using it.
