Kathmandu Metropolitan Police presenting Rajendra Pundit, accused of playing a role in the killing of Ritesh Rauniyar and Ashish Manandhar, before mediapersons on Thursday. | Kathmandu, December 4:
The police have arrested one of the three persons involved in the murder of two school students of Tahachal. Seventeen-year-old Rajendra Pundit, a friend of deceased Ritesh Rauniyar, was arrested four days ago for alleged involvement in the killings. A resident of Inaruwa Municipality, Sunsari, Rajendra, had been living in Swoyambhu, Kathmandu, when he was arrested. Pundit confessed his hand in the murders before the media. He claimed that he took the extreme step, as Rauniyar had come to know about his pistol. “But I never knew the consequences of my action. I’ll help the cops nab two others involved in the killings. I am ready to face any punishment.†A five-member investigation team was formed some days ago under the leadership of SSP Birendra Babu Shrestha, who is also the chief of the Metropolitan Police Crime Division. The team had a fortnight to submit its report. Following Pundit’s disclosure, Inspector Om Kunwar, one of the members of the investigation team, was sent to eastern Nepal in search of Pundit’s accomplices. AIG Ramesh Shrestha said Rajendra, accompanied by Birendra Kumar Pundit, 17, and Deepak Mehata, 17, had called Rauniyar on the pretext of paying him Rs 6,000 he owed him. Rauniyar came along with his friend, Ashish Manandhar, 15, a Grade IX student of New Zenith School. AIG Shrestha said they had planned to kill Rauniyar in a forest near Satungal. However, they took Rauniyar and Manandhar to Mahadevsthan Community Forest, where they killed them using a Khukuri. The police have recovered a handmade pistol, bullets and a Samsung mobile set from Pundit. Rauniyar and Manandhar went missing on November 15 and their bodies were found on November 26. Investigation has revealed that Rajendra had bought a homemade pistol for Rs 3,000 in Sunsari on October 3.
10-day custody: Kathmandu: Kathmandu District Court has remanded Rajendra Pundit to 10-day judicial custody. He is accused of playing a role in the murder of Ritesh Rauniyar and Ashish Manandhar. — HNS
Fund crunch often delays police probe: KAthmandu: Resource crunch has hit the police investigation into criminal cases. Investigation officer at the Metropolitan Police Crime Division Krishna Prasad Koirala says the police could work in a professional manner but they lacked resources. “We had to delay the investigation into Dr Upendra Devkota’s daughter’s kidnapping by a few days because we needed Rs 1.5 lakhs. We later procured the sum from the Police Headquarters,†he said. “The police won’t have taken the issue so seriously if Megha were not the daughter of Dr Devkota,†he claimed. The case of Ritesh and Ashish was taken up due to public pressure. “Funds are only allocated if there is intense public pressure or some big shot is involved,†said Inspector Krishna Prasad Koirala. Raj Kumar Silwal, who received the best investigating officer award for 2008, agreed: “The cases involving big shots and public pressure grab more media attention.†He claimed that lack of inter-agency cooperation also hampers investigation. — HNS

Truthfully speaking, the man is innocent until proven guilty. I don't understand why they have to parade a suspect in a media circus. They should save it for the court. Damn our judicial system. Let him have his day in the court...
