One of my friend's VISA has expired and wants to travel from one state to another from flight. Will he have any problem on it? I am pretty much sure he can travel in Greyhound. Please tell about it.

None. All he has to show is his driver's license as a proof of ID. Just in case he decides to show his passport, all they will look is the front page and not the visa page. It does help for him to take his 1-20 with his just in case. Better safe than sorry!

He has a state ID but there is a restriction that "ID will be valid until VISA" is valid. VISA  has been expired  so it  does seem reasonable to  show that expired ID. What about just show Passport? Please give me your suggestions.

Just show the passport then. Just like meera said, they will just look at the front page, the one with the photo. Its totally safe. However, if I was him, I would take my non-expired I-20.

Expired F-1visa has nothing to do with your status as long as your passport and I-20 are valid. Basically, bring your I-20 (just in case) and your ID/Driver License. Your passport is not even needed. They are NOT immigration officer, airport staff don't even know how F-1 visa looks like.

Having said that, if you are going to a border state like Texas, bring all your documentation. Once I went to South Padre Island and didn't know that they have a check point on the way back. You will be asked for all the documentation that proves you that you are staying here legally, you know what I mean.
Cheers!

Thanks all of you for your suggestions. His case is little bit different. He was with H-2B visa which is already expired and he does not have any other documents that proves he is here legally.

You never know what's coming up! Last year I was going back to Nepal and at the port of exit, they asked me my passport, obviously, my visa was expired and to my surprise, they asked me legal documents regarding my status in US, I had it  with me, so wasn't a problem, but if you are illegal, then it's better to avoid such circumstances and travel by personal car or public transport like Greyhound and Amtrak. I am sure, you don't want to risk your stay in US!
